Duties & Responsibilities
The Historic District Commission presides over more than 50 properties located in South Windsor's Historic District. The District is located on the northernmost mile stretch of "Old Main Street" and includes many beautiful and historically significant homes. The District was established to preserve one of Connecticut's most unique and historically exquisite areas.
Connecticut's state statutes give the Commission jurisdiction over the erection or alteration of any building or structure visible from a public street, way or place. This includes but is not limited to structures such as homes, garages, barns, signs, fences, walls, streets, bridges, driveways, monuments, parking lots, lamp posts, swimming pools, sidewalks and curbs.
Residents who wish to change the outside of their homes must submit a Certificate of Appropriateness to the Commission through the Building Department for review and approval. The Commission consists of five regular members and three alternates.
Commission Meetings:
The Historic District Commission meets at 7:30 p.m. on the 1st Tuesday of the month, January through July and September through December. All meetings are open to the public.
