During the Fiscal year 2006-2007 the Commission received thirty-two applications, which were approved with various conditions.

The Commission carried out its task with the assistance of Jeff Folger, Environmental Planner/Conservation Officer. The Commission was further assisted by staff in the Planning and Engineering Departments.

The IWA/CC sent representatives to the Open Space Task Force, SWALPAC, and the Linear Park Committee to aid these committees in addressing any wetland, conservation or land use planning issues.

In addition, the Commission oversees the management of the Wildlife Sanctuary.  We are aided in this effort by a number of dedicated volunteers.  Jeff Folger has taken on caretaker duties.  The Commission gratefully acknowledges the support of the Parks and Grounds Department of Public Works in their annual contribution of time spent in mowing the sledding hill, and interior meadows to control invasive, exotic plant species and maintain the hill as grassland habitat.  The town continued a USDA Wildlife Habitat Incentive Program grant to maintain meadow habitat at the Maj. Michael Donnelly Land Preserve by mowing early successional shrubs and planting warm season grass species with the assistance of the Parks and Ground Department.

The Conservation Commission produces and updates a series of educational brochures on the Sanctuary, which are available in the Planning department, the Town Clerks Office and at the Sanctuary.  The Conservation Commission also supported the Sustainable Forest Resource Grant project and the Natural Recourse Management Initiative on selected open space parcels.  Eagle Scout applicants on several of the recent open space acquisitions are carrying out many of the management recommendations listed in the project.  Commission sponsors the annual purchase and planting of witch hazel plants to stimulate a forest product income initiative.

The Conservation Commission also supported the planning and enhancement of features on the walking trails at the Major Michael Donnelly Land Preserve.  Sign holders were placed within the trail system to accommodate informational, directional, and educational signage.  A wildlife viewing blind was erected at the West Road end of the preserve and a raised viewing platform was built in the interior of the preserve.  The construction of these features was done as several Eagle Scout project.

The Commission also sponsored the continuation of a riparian restoration planting project on the Podunk River in Wapping Park.  This project is also the subject of a USDA Wildlife Habitat Incentive Project (WHIP) grant.
